Mormons Really Give Over 550 Million A Year Not 40 Million.

Much has been said about the recent lecture that Elder Dallin H. Oaks gave at Oxford, many critics of the Church have said that the church only gives 40 million dollars a year to humanitarian aid, they then say that is less than $5 per member. But that is neglecting the biggest way that the church helps others. TIME. If you don’t know what I am talking about here is a snippet from the Deseret news.

In a lecture given last month at the University of Oxford, Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said that each year The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spends about $40 million on welfare, humanitarian and other LDS Church-sponsored projects around the world and has done so for more than 30 years.

That would account for approximately $1.2 billion on welfare and humanitarian efforts over the past 30 years. Elder Oaks also said that in the last year alone, Mormon volunteers have devoted 25 million hours of labor.

Elder Oaks also states something very important. Over 25 million hours of service was given in 2015. We can not neglect the value of the labor! If you value the labor donated at the national average hourly wage, then that donated labor is worth over 510 million dollars.

So when you combine donated labor with pocketbooks Mormons give far more of themselves than a mere 40 million dollars, it is more than 550 million dollars!

But wait, there is more! That 550 million dollars of value donated last year is just in welfare and humanitarian aid! But members of the church give far more than just to welfare and humanitarian aid! According to a Penn study.

“through volunteering, an active Mormon provides a social contribution equivalent to $9,140 annually. … Through the church, on average, a Latter-day Saint donates $650 a year to social causes and another $1,171 a year outside the church.”

That is a social value of over $10,000 per active member!  Now that is a statistic you don’t hear haters bring up! Now there is a key word here active member.  A sad truth is that not all of the members are active. In many wards and branches it is less than 50% activity rates (let’s hasten to the rescue). But if every member was active the church would add a social value of over 150 BILLION dollars on a yearly basis.

So, let the haters hate as we try to live our religion!
